AGM and events for 2022

With Covid restrictions easing off, we believe it is time to keep promoting Mexican culture and heritage in WA. This post contains information about 2 important developments: FOMEX's AGM, and FOMEX's partnership with the WA Museum. Keep reading if you are interested in knowing how to participate in these events.

FOMEX's AGM
We are planning to have our AGM on Saturday 5 February, from 7 to 8 pm via WebEx. We will report on FOMEX's activities and finances, and will elect a new executive committee. You are welcome to volunteer for any of the following positions:
  • President
  • Secretary
  • Treasurer
  • General member
The committee meets 2 to 3 times a year to plan and organise activities.

WA Museum (Boola Bardip) partnership
The museum approached FOMEX to offer its facilities for cultural events. We have agreed to deliver a series of 4 seminars and organise a Day of the Dead festival at the museum. The title of the seminar series is "This is Mexico". The objective is to showcase beautiful aspects of Mexico to counterbalance the unintended bad publicity promoted by streaming TV shows and the media.
Seminars will be delivered by volunteers, as follows:
  • Sunday 20 March. "10 interesting facts about Mexico". Presented by Cesar Ortega.
  • Saturday 7 May. "Mexico's contributions to the world". Presented by Simon O'Connor.
  • Saturday 27 August. "A brief history of the Mayans". Presented by Ernesto Martinez.
  • Sunday 30 October. "Mexican Day of the Dead". Presented by Eugenia Schettino.
Every seminar will include a performance by Ixtzul, FOMEX's folkloric dance troupe.
The seminar on 30 October will be part of a big DoD festival, with activities for all ages.
All seminars will take place at the magnificent Hackett Hall (the big hall with a whale skeleton hanging from the ceiling!).

We look forward to reconnecting with you all. Let us keep promoting Mexican culture and heritage in WA.

It is with great pleasure that the committee would like to invite you to celebrate Mexican Independence Day on Saturday 17th September, from 6 pm to 12 am in the Redcliffe Hall, in Belmont. Same place as last year.

The format will be the same as previous editions:

- The fiesta will be for members only. You may renew your membership or become a member on the night. Or fill this form and send it to us by email, with a copy of your deposit.

- People will bring a Mexican dish to share. Bring enough food for you and your family, plus a bit more so that everyone can have a chance to try many dishes.

- FOMEX will pay for the hall, non-alcoholic drinks, music and tortillas.

- If possible bring your children wearing a regional costume to participate in El Grito ceremony.

- You may bring guests to the fiesta under the following conditions:
    - You bring enough food for you, your family, your guests and a bit more.
    - Your guests 12 and older will pay $20 AUD each. This money will go towards paying FOMEX's expenses.

- Please let Gigi Schettino (eugeniaschettino@gmail.com.au) know if you are planning to come and what dish you will bring, to avoid too many repeats.

As usual, we will need help to decorate the hall, set the tables, help in the kitchen (1 hr shifts), remove the tables, cleaning and transporting stuff to the hall. If you can volunteer for one or more of these activities, please let Gigi know.

We have more activities in store, stay tuned.
